The on-board PL3000/CFA instrumentation system plays a pivotal role during pile construction, allowing the operator to pinpoint precisely at what depth the underlying rock head is encountered before enabling accurate and economical regulation of the concrete placed as the auger is withdrawn. Van Elle recently took delivery of a new P140-TT - the latest machine from Llamada to join the fleet of the Nottinghamshire based piling specialist.
The on-board PL3000/CFA instrumentation system was largely fitted at Llamada's factory near Barcelona with final calibrations being undertaken in the the UK. Enhancing the instrumentation's standard specification, the PL3000/CFA supplied for this P140-TT included our optional modules for Mast Inclination and TrueTorque / Drilling Resistance. We were delighted to supply Dublin based piling specialist P J Edwards & Co. Ltd with a PL3000/CFA system for their new Llamada P240TT.
Pictured here in September 2016, the P240TT was the first of its kind to be imported into the UK and represents the latest addition to an established fleet of mostly Llamada equipment. With an impressive 420kNm of torque on tap and the ability to drill to depths of upto 41m without an auger extension, this machine is sure to make light work of most ground conditions. And with the PL3000/CFA on-board, MD Greg Edwards and his team can be assured that they have all the tools necessary to construct piles reliably, consistently and econmically. Prior to shipping from the UK, the rig was fitted with a fully featured NDT PL3000 instrumentation system. The system provides all of the tools necessary to ensure piles are constructed reliably, consistently and economically. Irrespective where the rig may be working, its sophisticated instrumentation system is linked to a unique data communications facility which allows near real-time online access of all construction data from any worldwide location via our proprietary NDTDataCloud application. For the ultimate in both convenience and quality control, this application also enables the remote upload of site profiles and piling schedules direct to the rig computer. The PL3000/CFA instrumentation system supplied by NDT for this rig includes our Mast Inclination and 'TrueTorque' options. The proprietary TrueTorque option allows the system to determine the instantaneous auger torque irrespective which gear has been selected by the rig operator. With TrueTorque, the system can also determine 'Drilling Resistance' - this is the rotary equivalent of a set, as used within driven piling, and is specifically related to the compressive strength / cone resistance of the soil. Developed by NDT and only available on our PL3000/CFA instrumentation systems, Drilling Resistance is used by customers worldwide as a definable boring target to ensure that piles drilled to refusal (or into rock) are done so consistently and, if required, to a specified 'rock hardness'. Keller Foundations has a long established policy of investing in NDT products and solutions throughout its expanding fleet of CFA, Driven and Soil Mixing rigs. In fitting the very latest feature-packed PL3000 systems across their range of Soilmec, Mait and Juntann machines, Keller ensures they are operating the ultimate in reliable, accurate and cost effective instrumentation systems. With NDT's unique two-way data communication between rigs and our ground-breaking NDTDataCloud application, Keller personnel can access the rig data and key production information online within a few moments of each pile's completion. Additionally, their engineering staff are able to remotely upload comprehensive piling schedules direct to the rig computer - this is a feature which has proven to be an extremely valuable tool for their office and site based staff alike. Pictured below is one of Keller's SF-65 rigs at a waterside location in Southampton, installing CFA piles reliably and efficiently with the aid of a PL3000/CFA system. A view of the rig from afar
A stunning view through the round window as we head out of the UK for one of our instrumentation training days.
Customers who have chosen to invest in tailored NDT training programs have reported improvements in profitability (often marked) after site based instruction has helped to reduce excess concrete consumption, more efficiently manage waste concrete, increase production figures, etc. If you would be interested in discussing how a comprehensive training day from one of NDT's specialists could benefit your company, please do not hesitate to contact us today. This Soilmec SR-30 became the first rig to be upgraded with an NDT PL3000/CFA system following the recent merger of Keller Australia subsidiaries Vibro-Pile, Frankipile & Piling Contractors.
The versatile SR-30 is the latest addition to Keller's well established fleet of Enteco, Fundex and Mait rigs already enjoying the benefits afforded by NDT instrumentation. Customer saves over £500 per day after switching to PL3000CFA instrumentationKings Lynn based piling contractor G M Piling recently purchased 2 new CFA piling rigs. The rigs were supplied with pre-fitted in-built instrumentation. In discussion with G M Piling’s Managing Director, John Earp, we suggested the instrumentation was upgraded to N D Technology’s PL3000CFA systems. ‘So why would G M Piling want to replace the in-built systems with your PL3000/CFA ?’ he asked. Our answer was simple - ‘Because with our systems, you can pile more efficiently and this will enable you to save a considerable amount of money. What’s more, we can prove it’. John was initially sceptical of our claim but was prepared to set up a back-to-back trial with 2 rigs at the same site. One rig used the in-built instrumentation and the other used NDT’s PL3000 instrumentation. The trial showed conclusively that the PL3000 equipped rig allowed each pile to be constructed with less excess concrete. So much less that the savings in concrete amounted to more than £500 per day - that's over £125,000 per rig per year ! In little more than 6 weeks, this means the instrumentation would pay for itself completely and within just 5 to 6 years, the savings would equal the entire cost of the piling rig!* But the benefits of the PL3000 system don’t end there. In addition to providing a highly effective tool to control the installation of CFA piles, the system also provides a sophisticated back-office data management solution – N D Technology’s ground breaking online application 'Datacloud'. Datacloud allows piling managers to see at a glance the daily progress of their sites in near real time whilst mobile on a tablet or a smartphone, or in the office on a PC or smart TV. You can see, for example, the start times of the rigs, the number of piles installed, how many linear metres have been bored, the concrete consumption, the oversupply, the delay times etc. On the strength of the on-site trial, GM Piling placed orders for PL3000/CFA systems to ensure their entire piling fleet was fitted with NDT instrumentation. With the latest systems now having been up and running for several months, we were delighted to receive the following feedback from John Earp (GMP MD):
“After a long and productive relationship with N D Technology, G M Piling Limited recently invested in the PL3000 system and Datacloud for its two newly purchased CFA rigs. The rigs originally operated with an alternative system, however taking into consideration our extensive experience with the NDT system, and G M Piling’s requirements, we elected to retro fit the PL3000 thereby standardising the instrumentation of our fleet of CFA rigs. The NDT PL3000 instrumentation system and the Datacloud has become an indispensable tool for GM Piling. We can monitor and react if necessary to real time situations with actual ‘concrete’ information. One of our largest projects recently undertaken in London was to install CFA piles in layered strata. At tender stage we calculated the total concrete volume based on our experiences from previous projects in this area with similar ground conditions, pile diameters and lengths. Our aim was to reduce this figure whilst still installing satisfactory quality piles. Given the scale of this project we needed to monitor our activities closely not only in regards to concrete volume but production levels as well. The PL3000 system and the Datacloud enabled us to do this on a daily basis throughout this contract period, so at any point during the project we would know whether we were on programme and the volume of concrete used, and therefore make real-time changes as necessary to deliver a cost efficient project. Monitor + record + review + improve = high quality of installation in an improved cost efficient way. With the technology now available to us, we have been able to achieve our desire to innovate and improve. We now have the tools to advance our continuing goal to save money whilst delivering a quality product.” If you are not using PL3000/CFA systems on all your piling rigs and would like see how much our systems and expertise could benefit your company, please contact us for further information. *A £500 per day saving on concrete used can amount to over £125,000 per rig per year. In 6 years, this equates to £750,000, equivalent to (or more than) the cost of many CFA rigs. P J Edwards & Co recently took delivery of a new Llamada P135 piling rig.
Incorporating the most up to date technology, an impressive torque figure of 34tm and the capability to carry out Cased Flight Piling, the rig is the latest addition to P J Edwards' well established and varied fleet of Llamada rigs. One of our latest specification PL3000/CFA systems complements the cutting edge rig and ensures that Greg Edwards and his team across UK and Ireland get the very best from their latest investment. Two NDT PL3000/CFA systems were recently supplied to Piling Equipment Ltd for their Soilmec R312 & SR-30 machines. Both systems have full cellular connectivity to our NDTDataCloud application which enables any registered user to view the rigs' historic and ongoing piling data from any browser enabled device. With both rigs having piling work already booked, the systems needed to be installed in a very short space of time. Working closely with Tony & Graham and their team at Warminster, we were able to ensure that the systems were fully commissioned and ready to go well ahead of schedule.
